Inside the United States: On Restaurants

Let's imagine that tonight you're going out to eat. You've chosen a restaurant like Denny's. Denny's is a famous nationwide chain known for its simple, tasty and inexpensive meals.
 
At Denny's, as in most restaurants, you shouldn't just walk in and choose wherever you wish to sit down. A hostess¹ will greet you as soon as you enter and then seat you.
After the hostess has seated you, the waiter/waitress² comes by and, as is customary in restaurants like that, he/she serves you a glass of ice water. After giving you some time to study the menu, he/she'll ask you:

 

Can I take your order? / Are you ready to order yet?

Perhaps you still want some more time to study the menu. So you tell him/her:

Give me a few minutes more, please.

Finally, you order. In a short time, the waiter/waitress serves you the meal and with it, leaves the check on the table.




At this moment, you may think with yourself that they left the check because you're supposed that you are to eat your meal in a hurry and get out of the restaurant. Not at all. That is a customary procedure at places like Denny's. With the check already on the table, the customer avoids the inconvenience of having to track down³ his/her waiter/waitress to get it (the check) later.
You'll see that it's convenient for the customer because when you're ready to leave, you can just grab your check, walk up to the cashier, and pay.
It goes without saying that you may enjoy your meal at leisure and if you wish to order anything else, like dessert, the waiter/waitress will add that to your check.

³track sb/sth down - to find sb/sth after searching in several different places.

Vamos imaginar que hoje à noite você irá jantar fora. Você escolheu um restaurante como o Denny's. O Denny's é uma famosa cadeia internacional de resaturantes conhecida por suas refeições simples, gostosas e acessíveis.
No Denny's, como na maioria dos restaurantes, você não deve somente entrar e escolher qualquer lugar que você deseja sentar. Uma recepcionista irá recebê-lo assim que você entrar e, então, orientá-lo onde há lugares disponíveis para você sentar.

Depois de a recepcionista ter-lhe indicado um lugar para sentar, o garçom ou garçonete se aproxima e, como de costume em restaurantes deste estilo, ele/ela lhe serve um copo de água gelada. Depois de lhe dar algum tempo para analisar o cardápio, ele/ela irá lhe perguntar:
Can I take your order? (Posso anotar seu pedido)
Are you ready to order yet? (Você já sabe o que irá pedir?)
Talvez você queira ainda um tempo para analisar o cardápio. Então você dirá a ele/ela:
Give me a few minutes more, please. (Dê-me mais alguns minutos, por favor.)
Finalmente, você pede. Em pouco tempo, o garçom/a garçonete lhe serve a refeição e, junto a ela, deixa a conta em sua mesa.

Neste momento, você pode imaginar que eles deixaram a conta porque é para você comer sua refeição rapidamente e sair do restaurante. Não é por causa disso, todavia. Este é um procedimento de costume em lugares como o Denny's. Com a conta já na mesa, o cliente evita a iconveniência de ter de ficar atrás de seu graçom/sua garçonete para obter a conta depois.
Você verá que esta sistemática convém ao cliente pois, quando você estiver pronto para ir embora, é só você pegar sua conta, ir até o caixa e pagar.
Não é preciso dizer que você deve curtir sua refeição tranquilamente e, se desejar pedir mais alguma coisa, como uma sobremesa, o garçom/a garçonete irá adicionar o valor deste pedido à sua conta.

In this section, we've looked at some practical aspects of life in the U.S. Our coverage, however, would be incomplete if we didn't mention something about social habits and cultural codes in the U.S.

Perhaps you've asked yourself the question: what are Americans* really like? The answer is simple: it depends on the American. To know what Americans are really like you have to begin by dealing with Americans as individuals. Then, over a period of time, you'll probably notice certain things that those Americans, or at least some of them, have in common. Your own individual experience is the best way for you to determine what Americans are really like.

In the follow subsections a few important points are covered, in order to help you to immunize from any cultural shock during your visit to the States. They are meant as observations about certain forms of behaviour or social habits which are share by many American individuals.

Food and Eating Etiquette

If you go to a fast-food restaurant, you'll notice that Americans almost always eat such things as pizza, French Fries, or fried chicken with their hands. We may assume that Americans eat so many foods with their hands because it's easier and because it is taken for granted that they usually wash up before eating.

To some foreigners, however, eating with the hands may seem strange or perhaps unhygienic. However, eating pizza with a fork and knife would seem strange to many Americans.

What about eating a sandwich? You'll notice that Americans almost always eat sandwiches with their hands. If you decide to wrap the sandwich in a napkin to eat it, or if you try to eat it with a knife and fork, you may get some curious looks from those around you. 
 

*Americans (noun) = besides refering to any person from America (continent), it also means any citizen

Se você for a um restaurante de fast food, irá perceber que os americanos quase sempre comem coisas como pizza, batata frita ou frango frito com as mãos. Poderíamos a partir disto supor que os americanos comem tantas coisas com as mãos porque é mais fácil e porque presumimos que eles lavam as mãos antes de comer.

Para alguns estrangeiros, no entanto, comer com as mãos pode parecer estranho ou talvez até anti-higiênico. Entretanto, comer pizza com garfo e faca seria muito estranho para muitos americanos.

E quanto a comer um sanduíche? Você irá observar que os americanos quase sempre comem  sanduíches com as mãos. Se você decidir envolver seu sanduíche com um guardanapo para comê-lo, ou se tentar comê-lo com garfo e faca, poderá atrair olhares curiosos para si.

*Americanos (substantivo) = além de referir a qualquer pessoa que viva no continente americano, também significa qualquer cidadão dos EUA.
